Yarn used: .62 skeins of Austermann Step Colorway 05 (Wool, Nylon) 100g / 460 yds This yarn is treated with Jojoba aloe. Should keep the socks soft through 40 washes.
Care Instructions: Machine Wash
Needle Size: US 1 (2.25mm)
Modifications: None.
Finished Size: Women’s Medium
Date Started: 7/5/2008
Date Completed: 8/5/2008
Notes: These socks were a test of faith that they wouldn’t look terrible once done. The toe started out seeming huge, but I knit away figuring if they were too big I could give them to someone. Then the first 3 inches just looked hideous to me but I figured I could give them to someone. Then there was a week with 3 knit nights, 10 hrs in the car and lots of free time on Saturday and Sunday. The socks quickly took shape and stopped being ugly and now, they are done!

Oh and I made these socks match, only had to cut the yarn one place in each sock to make the color repeats line up. Too cool.

It’s official, I do not like provisional cast on short row toes. I will stick with my crazy Cat Bordhi eastern style cast on for toe up socks, henceforth.

The boy and I traipsed out to the lake house this weekend. My parents have been inviting us down to see their new boat so we obliged and squeezed them into our busy busy summer schedule. (The summer of weddings and business travel attacks!) Saturday after eating a scrumptious breakfast at our favorite small town eatery we headed back to the cabin to get ready to go boating. Unfortunately the boat battery was dead so we distracted ourselves with things like billiards, knitting and reading while the battery charged. Then we got ready to head out in the boat. Here is the boy ready to go:

Alas, when we got to the dock the boat wouldn’t start. We couldn’t get it to jump and so we had to go back to the cabin. We ate lunch and then went ahead and walked to the lake instead. It was a ton of fun just swimming and splashing around.

The overall trip was really great and relaxing. Hopefully we will be able to go back down in a couple of months and get out on the water in the new boat.

We’re off to the woods this weekend. This is our first bit of summer that we have been able to snag all summer (not including the 4th of July). The woods is a bit of an internet and cell phone black hole so I won’t be posting again until Sunday/Monday. Hopefully though I will have some time to compose posts and get y’all caught up on what’s been going on these past 2 months. Have a great weekend!

PS - I plan to get some knitting done. Is it wrong that I am taking two projects as well as enough yarn to swatch oh 3 or 4 more projects if I get so inspired? My excuse is that I am going to be taking pictures of the yarn. That’s it…

10 Ways the World Has Changed Since You’ve Been in School

It’s been four years since I graduated from college. Turns out it’s kind of hard to figure out how the world changes in such a short time span. Sometimes things really do change that quickly. Bear in mind this list is heavily slanted toward my own ethnocentric perception of the world.

1. Gas Prices - When I bought my car four years ago right after graduation I could fill ‘er up for under $20 every time. Even when she was really empty. Now it’s doubled and I push $40 for one fill up.

2. Orgainc Food - The push for organic food became so main stream that to me, it almost lost its value. Now consumers have to really check to make sure what they are buying is organic and to find out what exactly the manufacturer’s “definition” of organic is.

3. Ravelry - this may not be a global thing but for me it has shaped the majority of my online knitting interaction. I found Ravelry right as I found the online knitting world and so it seems like it has always been there. I hear a different tune from my friends who were around before its existence, mind you.

4. MySpace - So this may have been around before I graduated, I know Facebook was, but I didn’t use it until after graduation and it really seems to shape how those in my generation interact with one another. I am on the cusp of X and Y and the rest of the Y’ers go crazy for some myspace. (I canceled my account.)

5. Telecommuting - a sub sect of the green movement, this has become so commonplace that the federal government encourages it when possible and I actually now telecommute.

6. Landlines - have disappeared. Well at least for my generation. We all get cell phones in college and then never really see the need to pay another $30/month for a phone that won’t go with you when it’s time to leave. Not to mention said phone is usually target for lots of telemarketers.

7. Internet TV - the use of the internet to download TV shows became so commonplace that broadcast networks (ABC) began distributing their content on the web as well as on those funny square boxes people have in their homes.

8. Apple - rebounded and started to pick up market share outside the world of academia and visual communications.

9. Air carriers - come and go. Skybus came around and went belly up. There was another one too…I was in their frequent flier program but I can not for the life of me remember their name. They closed and gave up their spot at Dulles airport and I think Southwest then bought their spot. (It’s not JetBlue or AirTrain - but it came around at the same time as those … I something or other)

10. Alternative Fuels - got a large boost due to the gas prices sky rocketing. Ethanol gasoline and the American corn crop. Bio Diesel is doing fairly well as far as I know.

I finished seaming two things this weekend. I seamed my minimalist cardigan (action shots to come!) and that surprise I knitted last weekend. We also painted the closet, hung the shelves, put everything back in the closets, got the lawn mowed and a sundry of other tasks around the house. I began knitting the hemlock ring but somewhere I lost a stitch so I lost about 4.5 hrs of knitting time tinking back to find the lost stitch and then the re-knitting I will have to do tom’w morning. I want to have this knit up to the chart so all I have to take on the plane is the chart.

Tomorrow I am off to Utah for a family vacation. The blog will most likely be updated when I get back as there is a distinct lack of communication between my camera and the mac. (and any other computer that doesn’t have a memory card slot built in.) If any one knows how to fix this problem I would be much obliged. (Basically the cable doesn’t work, or rather when using the cable none of the computers - pc or mac - recognize the camera. Oh and I have multiple cables that don’t work, not just one. And this problem happened with my old camera too, the one that TSA stole.)

Me! and the rest of the Clintonville Knit gang. I knew they were coming as of Wednesday and decided to keep it as a surprise for everyone else. (Well, I told one person so I could get assistance saving seats at the restaurant.) The funny thing is, even though no one *knew* all the regulars decided to show up so we had about 15 people in attendance! That’s a bit larger than our normal crowd but not too overwhelming. Mary-Heather, Jess and Casey arrived about 45 minutes into our knit night. There were some folks who were quite surprised! We had a grand time just sitting, knitting, drinking beer (well not me, I don’t do beer) and eating. They brought along some buttons and stickers that were passed around. I also got to see the new tri-fold handouts for advertising.

The boy rolled in after his happy hour was over to hang out for a little bit as well. He took pictures with other folks’ cameras because silly me remembered my camera but not my memory card. Alas, I do not have my own pictures. Perhaps once everyone returns home from their travels I will be able to swipe pictures from other people. For now you get text.

Oh and I started seaming my sweater. I must have it done before I go on vacation because it could be cold!
