I have been struggling with the mouse on my PC for several months now (the scrolling wheel won’t scroll up) and I may have broken the stands on my keyboard a couple of months back. I kept telling myself that I would go get a new mouse and keyboard soon. Today was finally the day, we headed off to Target and while I waded through the horror that is printer ink, the boy located the keyboards and mice. ~ As a side note, I feel that printer ink should last for more than just one ream of paper, heck none of them even purport to last for a ream of paper! ~ Most of the keyboards for sale were all fancy pants and wireless. It appears it is time for me to move on up in the world and get with the times. I was mulling over which keyboard to buy when I realized that the Logitech mouse/keyboard set was on sale for $15. And sold! The boy even picked up a set for himself. We’ll use it in the basement to watch our Netflix movies because we are so hi tech. Some day we may even get a TV with resolution clear enough to read the Netflix menu. Once we got home we plugged them in to check out if they would work with our individual needs – I needed mine to work with my KVM switch and the boy needed to be able to game with his mouse. All was well. I can even scroll up! It’s very exciting for me.

Now, the boy is complaining that his mouse is squeaking…we’ll see if it’s still squeaking in the morning. Silly boy.

In other news, that riddle from yesterday, it’s gotten worse. I am totally going to run out of yarn and I can’t decide if I should just rip it out now at 28″ and just re-knit the yarn into a new pattern. Or if I should block the scarf long or if I should just write a note apologizing to whomever receives the scarf for its short stature and give them some ideas on how to wear it all fancy like. Sigh.

Today is the boy’s birthday. We will now be the same age for the next 2.5 months until I level up again. heh. I think I have just decided to refer to adding years on to my age as leveling up. Brilliant! The boy was quite happy with his “old man gifts” today, new slippers from me and clamps from his parents. Then of course I got him a child’s gift – the Lego Advent calendar which clearly says on the box for ages 5-12. It took some persuading but he won’t be opening any of the doors before the proper day. My sister also made a cake which my parents were awesome enough to deliver. Then we spent the rest of our day just relaxing. We have to get back to the grind tom’w. It’s sad to see this lovely 4 day weekend end.

In other news, I have a riddle for you -

How can a scarf measure 10″ length and 15g of yarn used; then 3 hours later measure 21.5″ length with 45g of yarn used? Give up? Me too. Oh well. Hopefully I won’t run out of yarn too soon. Also, it appears that I have the same gauge all the way through but I haven’t taken a precise measurement. Gauge doesn’t count for scarves

I was reading Anne’s blog today and saw that there is a serious shortage of scarves for the Red Scarf project. If any of you have time over the holidays to whip out a scarf (knit or crochet) to send along it would be much appreciated. I am going to try very hard to get one done by Dec 10th as the last day for the collection is Dec 15th. The red scarf project benefits children who have aged out of foster care and are going off to college.

Scarf Size: Approximately 60″ long and 5″ to 8″ wide. Scarves should be long enough to be wrapped around the neck, with tails long enough to be tied in the front.

Style: Think unisex collegiate. Ask yourself if your son, brother, and/or husband would enjoy receiving the scarf. Fringes are optional. Your scarf should drape and tie easily.

Yarn: Preferably DK, double fingering-weight, worsted weight, or light bully yarns. No laceweight, super-chunky, or mohair yarns as there are many people who find mohair too itchy. The yarn should be soft.

Color: Red! However, this could mean burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, or multicolor hues including red. Other unisex colors, including black, navy, teal, olive or gold are also welcome.

Finished and tagged: Yarn ends should be securely sewn in. For a personal touch, attach a tag saying “Handmade for You” with your first name, city, and group affiliation, if any. Donors have also included washing instructions, messages of encouragement, gift cards, burger bucks, books of stamps, etc.

For more information and patterns check out the official Red Scarf Project page.

So as I was saying yesterday, I was almost done with the preemie hats. I cast on the preemie hat number two after work and before dinner. Then when I came home from dinner I parked myself in bed to knit up the ribbing. I had just begun the the stockinette portion when it was time for bed. For some unbeknownst reason I woke up this morning at 637am. I decided since I was up I should go ahead and try to finish this hat. And well, I did. Hooray! Details below.

Care Instructions: Machine wash
Needle Size: US 8 (5 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm)
Modifications: For hat #2 I dropped my needle size to a US 7 (4.5 mm)
Finished Size: newborn and medium
Date Started: 1/28/2009
Date Completed: 2/5/2009
Notes: My first hat looks kind of terrible. However for the second hat I dropped down to a US 7 needle and one with a thinner cord. The second hat looks batter by leaps and bounds. Also I re-read the decrease instructions and I definitely did them wrong the first time. They also look better on the second hat. Thankfully hat #2 only took two days to knit.

This year’s charity for Sticks N Stitches is Touching Little Lives. I like to make something for the charity to “hand in” as mine and the boy’s admission to the game (along with the cost of the ticket). In mid January I cast on for two buntings. The buntings knit up quickly although they’re not the best KIP knitting since folks always ask what you’re making and I couldn’t come up with a good cover story. So I kept bringing the general mood down. Ahh well, whoever said all charity knitting is all sunshine and lollipops? I found the flannel for the lining at JoAnn’s and the lady at the cutting counter was quite familiar with the charity. It was nice to be able to talk about the impact this local charity has in our community. So without further ado, here are the pictures:

Notes: I used a smidgen of yellow flannel for the lining and a smidgen of 3/8″ ribbon.

PS – There’s still time for folks coming to Sticks N Stitches to whip one of these up. Next I will be casting on two preemie hats.
